TAYLOR COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL
-
1996 Conception, Development, Coordination, Logo & Promotion
of the Taylor County Arts Council in Grafton WV. │
(MCMXCVI) (herein referred to as TCAC).
With the help of the Tygart Valley Development Authority, Community Action,
and the Center for Rural Enterprises, Bruce Miller, Bill Spears and Sally Cooper,
I surveyed Taylor County on foot to inquire about
interests in forming an arts council.
The enthusiasm inspired me to write
to the local and state senators and put invitations
in the local paper to start meeting monthly at the
Tygart Lake State Park Lodge. They were a success.
I met the inspiring new arrivals, Thea and Blaine Porter
who accelerated the momentum.
We began fulfilling a public need for
creative expression by developing the Premier 1997
Memorial Day Juried Fine Arts Exhibit at the
court house in Grafton, West Virginia.
For several years TCAC operated under the "umbrella"
organization Tygart Valley Development Authority.
A few years later, the non-profit organization was incorporated.
In 2005, following years of growth in membership,
dedication and perseverance, TCAC purchased (for a ridiculously nominal fee)
"Gallery 62 West" from another inspiring couple,
Lorna Vincent and Sarel Venter.
Plans for restoration continued and the roof was repaired
and the facade was painted by the City of Grafton.
Today, the gallery continues to be solely supported by volunteers,
donations, grants, fundraising and dues.
